Who was your most influential teacher and why?
The most influential teacher to me was Mr. Addis. He was my history teacher for three years and taught me through many stages in my life. Not only did he answer my endless questions, but he also always offered extra help within office hours. I enjoyed his teaching style and the assessments that followed. He greatly contributed to my knowledge of history and furthered my interest in things I never knew about.
What was your favorite class and why?
My favorite class was Modern American Women Honors with Dr. Gillin. This class impacted me as a woman and as a student. Learning the history of feminism and gender roles embedded in society, even today, was so interesting to me. Dr. Gillin cares so much about the topic and even brought in a nurse to further explain the topics we were learning about. This class impacted me and influenced me to add studies similar to it to my college classes. I am in the process of adding gender studies as a minor. In all, this class truly made me reflect and think about the experiences of women and influenced me to want to contribute.
What was your most memorable experience at Shipley?
My most memorable single experience at Shipley was Super Saturday. It was always so fun to spend the whole day with my friends and watch their games. They also came to my volleyball game, which meant a lot to me. Overall, my favorite experiences at Shipley were sitting in the lounge with my friends and talking. It was so nice to have things to look forward to every academic day. Both of those experiences gave me closer connections to my friends and even teachers.
What does Courage for the Deed; Grace for the Doing mean to you?
To me, Courage for the Deed; Grace for the Doing means being brave and doing the right thing for you and for others. It takes strength to stand up for what's right, speak your truth, or learn about difficult things, and that is courage. The grace is what follows: the actions that improve the lives of everyone around you, and the kindness we show to everyone. In all, Courage for the Deed; Grace for the Doing is the strength to do what's right and the kindness of the actions you perform.
How has Shipley encouraged you to take risks?
Shipley encouraged me to take risks by giving me opportunities I never would have conquered on my own. Shipley made me speak out in classes I love and clubs where I had leadership positions. In athletics, I took risks by trying new skills and pushing myself to new levels. Being a student at Shipley encouraged leadership and drive in everyday situations. Many like me have become leaders by taking risks and stepping outside of the box.
Please write a short reflection on your time at Shipley and what it meant to you.
In all, Shipley meant so much to me as a person, student, and leader. As a person, I made lifelong connections by just showing up to school. Shipley gave me my closest friends through sports, academics, and clubs, and gave me so much special time with them. As a student, I learned so much about the topics I deeply care about and am willing to take all I know into the future. The teachers guided me so much along the way. Finally, as a leader, I had the opportunity to have positions in committees and be a softball captain, both of which have influenced me to use my voice and guide those who are younger than me. I am so grateful for my four years spent at Shipley. I grew and learned so much, and cannot wait to use the values I have gained at Shipley in the future.
