Who was your most influential teacher and why?
The most influential teacher was Ms. Willing. She was always there to support me during her honors biology class. That class was exceptionally difficult for me, but she was ready to lend a hand whenever I needed it. When I was at my lowest, she was very understanding and helped me regardless. I really appreciated her patience and kindness.
What was your favorite class and why?
My favorite class was comparative anatomy and neuroscience with Mr. Clement. I really enjoy the subject. I had a limited knowledge of the human body and brain, and this class covered a lot about both. It's just a really interesting class.
What was your most memorable experience at Shipley?
My junior prom was probably my most memorable experience, even though it wasn't technically located at Shipley's campus. It was at the aquarium, and I loved the joy that everyone brought. Junior year was particularly difficult because that was the beginning of the college application process, but it makes me happy to look back on when we could forget about it for a night and enjoy each other's presence along with the fish.
What does Courage for the Deed; Grace for the Doing mean to you?
Courage for the deed to me means to have the courage to stand up for what I believe in, even if it seems difficult. It takes courage to put yourself out into the world because it can feel very vulnerable. Taking that first step can make a huge difference in a community or even the world. Grace for the doing to me means that I should still remain respectful and considerate in how I compose myself.
How has Shipley encouraged you to take risks?
Shipley always encouraged students to speak their mind. Whether that be in classroom discussions or interacting in clubs or at lunch. Teachers also encouraged students to meet with them during office hours. As a freshman, this task was very daunting because teachers were the ones with all the power, but I came to realize that teachers just wanted us to succeed. They wanted to hear our thoughts and helped us put out our best work. They listened to our crazy ideas.
Please write a short reflection on your time at Shipley and what it meant to you.
I was at Shipley since the sixth grade, and over the years, the teachers, faculty, and students were always so encouraging. Over time, the teachers taught me how to self-advocate and how to be disciplined while learning, all while still having fun. I made my closest friends at Shipley, and we shared some of the best memories together. I hope to keep these friends and memories for the rest of my life.
